Groomsmen photography can comprise many genres: formal, classic, casual, comic, and sometimes, even a little wild! Whatever your style, it’s appropriate to prepare a list of do’s and don’ts for your wedding photographer. Because wedding day events will go by so quickly, you will most likely want to have a variety of photographs that document the best moments of this special day! Formally scheduling time for groomsmen portraits will provide the opportunity to capture these special friends and family members in attractive, memorable, and sometimes, very creative ways! Also, it’s fun to see what groomsmen do when unattended by the bride and her bridesmaids!

Your groom may want to take a very active role in deciding just when, where, and how his photos and the groomsmen photos will be shot. Or, he may leave all of the photography details in your hands, preferring just to show up. In any case, decide your preferences and share them with your photographer.

Preferably, a minimum of 15 minutes will be allocated for your groomsmen photos and your photographer will be aware of all poses that are important to you. Ideally, your photographer will have a photo guide prepared for your groom, his best man, and his groomsmen, which will visually prepare them for their poses. This photo guide should illustrate desired body position, foot position and hand position, all of which are important in composing attractive and cohesive portraiture.

Capturing posed groom only portraits beforehand allows the best man and groomsmen some collective downtime as well as ensures that photographs of the groom reflect him freshly dressed and portrait ready. Organizing the poses according to priority also makes certain that your most valuable portraits will be taken. For example, it may be more important for you to have the groomsmen looking more polished than playful, therefore do formal lines: hands to the front crossed and folded, hands behind back crossed and folded, hands loosely at sides, and hands in pockets.

Traditional V formations, group hugs, jackets off, or arms around one another make for fantastic, easy, and beautiful photographs. Additional attention should be paid to eye contact, either with one another or the photographer, boutonniere position, and individual and group posture.

Saving the physically demanding photographs for last will minimize disheveled appearances during the more formal shots and also minimize perspiration. Ensure that the groomsmen each have a usable handkerchief to blot excess facial sweating as well as oil absorbing sheets to minimize shine on photos.

Also, you may want to ensure that pant length is consistent and if choosing traditional neckties, that each tie falls agreeably above the waist.

When brides prefer the zany or crazy, there are a number of non-back-breaking go-to poses. Consider the squat! Depending upon facial expressions, squats can say a variety of silliness. “We are manly and cool,” “we are goofs,” “we are the hottest guys out there,” or just, “we like to have fun!” In every squat, groomsmen need to ensure that a little leg room is available!

Also, in the case of some squats and some ankle poses, groomsmen socks can look great in photos! Consider matching them to ties or boutonnières, keeping them plain, or getting one of every color!
